The process of converting a shell into an easy-open end requires a series of very precise tooling strikes as the shell transits through the conversion press. These press actions reform the metal in the panel area to create a rivet to accept the tab, along with the addition of strengthening features and a score line. During this manufacturing process sub-micron defects can appear. Using on and off-line test and inspection equipment allows ends manufacturers to detect and prevent defective ends reaching customers.
