1999

This year was filled with excitement and anticipation as the world prepared to enter a new millennium. The internet was rapidly transforming daily life and the supposed Millennium Bug (Y2K) was causing global anxiety, prompting massive efforts across every industry to prevent a feared global computer meltdown at midnight. NASA launched the Chandra X-ray Observatory, offering a new window into the universe, and scientists succeeded in mapping the first complete human chromosome.

Sencon launched the SC7000 Mis-Spray Detector, the SI9507 Formed Can Probe, and an LED light source for our ELTP leak detection system. We also released the Mark 4 version of our highly successful QA2600 Automatic Enamel Rater. Our team attended the Metpack show in Essen, Germany and we gave out the very first Sencon mousemat to customers.

2000

This year the dot-com bubble burst. It was the year of the Sydney Summer Olympics and the Sony Playstation 2. The world looked skyward as the International Space Station (ISS) welcomed its first permanent crew, marking a new era of international collaboration in space.

Sencon launched a new Semi-Auto Enamel Rater, the SI9100 and the Sensor Selector on CD Rom, designed to make selecting the correct sensor as easy as possible. Our team attended the Cannex Fillex Asia Pacific show in China.

This year’s mousemat featured images of several key Sencon products, including: QA2600, Hoverprobe™, SI9000, Short Can Sensors and ELTP™.

2001

This year saw Wikipedia’s launch usher in a new era of shared knowledge online, while Apple’s introduction of the first iPod revolutionized the way the world listened to music. The first space tourist visited the International Space Station, and the world’s first self-contained artificial heart was successfully implanted. Despite all these giant leaps for mankind, and much to the chagrin of sci-fi fans, we must confirm that no contact was made with extra-terrestrials (a detail that still disappoints us all).

Sencon opened a new regional sales office in Montpelier, France, and a new Compound Liner Gun Control system was launched. Our team attended the Cannex the Americas show in Denver, USA.

2002

This year saw the introduction of Euro coins and banknotes across twelve European Union member states, completing one of the most significant monetary changes in history. The Winter Olympics were held in Salt Lake City and Brazil won the FIFA World Cup which took place in Japan and South Korea, marking the first time the tournament was co-hosted. A new era of private spaceflight began with the founding of SpaceX.

Sencon launched the Litho4 an in-line 360° inspection system for can decoration, the QA5200 End Progression Gauge and the MLT™ Micro Leak Tester for ends. A new version of our popular SI9500, the SI9600 Coatings Thickness Gauge was also released. The team attended the Metpack show in Essen, Germany and AsiaCan in Hong Kong and Aerotech & Metaltech in Shanghai.

2003

This year saw China become the third nation to send a human to orbit with Shenzhou 5, and scientists successfully completed the Human Genome Project, unlocking a new age of personalized medicine. The year also saw the birth of major future tech players with the founding of Tesla and LinkedIn, and the launch of the iTunes Music Store, which fundamentally reshaped the way we purchase and enjoy media.

Sencon launched X-Seam, a revolutionary, automatic, non-destructive seam measurement system, the QA4400 Automatic Film Weight Gauge and SC8400 On-line Film Weight Gauge. This year also saw the arrival of the SI3300 Dome Reversal Gauge and the Pin Oven Logger with an improved version of the Hexagon™ analysis software. We attended the Cannex Asia Pacific show in Singapore which was hit by the first effects of the SARS virus, with many travelers cancelling their journey to Singapore at the last minute.

This year’s mousemat laid out the full range of Sencon products for 2- and 3-piece canmakers and fillers.

2004

This year saw the launch of Facebook, which revolutionized the social landscape, and the era of private spaceflight began as SpaceShipOne reached the edge of space. NASA's Spirit and Opportunity rovers successfully landed on Mars to begin their search for signs of water and the world watched as the Summer Olympics returned to their historic home in Athens, Greece.

Sencon launched the MEER™, a multi-end enamel rater, an updated 278 Die Protection Sensor, and large-scale installations of the MLT™, Micro Leak Tester began. Matsumoto Kinzoku Kogyo Company in Osaka was appointed as our exclusive agent for Japan (MKK are still our agent today). The team attended the Cannex Fillex de las Américas show in Denver, USA and the Emballage show in France where X-Seam was shown.

This year’s mousemat featured a view across Loch Linnhe in the Scottish Highlands, near Fort William, UK.

2005

This year saw the first ever video ‘Me at the Zoo’ uploaded to YouTube. In space, the Huygens probe successfully landed on Saturn's moon Titan, sending back breathtaking images and data, while the Deep Impact mission successfully collided with Comet Tempel 1 to study its interior.

Sencon launched the EPG, the world’s first non-contact, automatic measurement system for EOE’s, the compact and low cost Label Verifier, and the SC640 Lacquer Presence Detector. We developed ‘Sure-Fill™’ a dedicated delivery system for use with surfactant enhanced electrolytes, designed to prevent foaming. Our team attended the Metpack show in Essen, Germany.

This year’s mousemat featured a photo taken by Kamila Stachera of Ball Packaging, Europe, who took the picture while on holiday in Croatia .

2006

This year saw Pluto reclassified as a dwarf planet, Italy beat France on penalties in the final of the FIFA World Cup in Germany, and the Winter Olympics were held in Turin. Social Media was on the rise with Facebook and Twitter gaining popularity and the Sony Playstation 3 and Nintendo Wii were both launched this year.

At Sencon we celebrated our 30th anniversary by re-engineering our range of sensors using the latest electronic components. We launched the SC430 and SC450 for detecting translation and mis-registration of sheets at the coater, and the SC620 for detecting can bodies that are welded inside out. ULTP gained an LED light source and ELTP was updated to handle large round and non-round ends. Our team attended the Cannex Fillex Asia Pacific show in Singapore.

This year’s mousemat featured a photo of Worcester Cathedral in England, a majestic medieval church renowned for its stunning Gothic architecture and scenic location overlooking the River Severn.

2007

This year saw Apple launch the very first iPhone, marking a revolutionary moment in the mobile phone industry. The final book in the Harry Potter series, the ‘Deathly Hallows’, was published and the UK suffered from its wettest summer on record, with widespread flooding and disruption.

Sencon released an updated ELTP capable of testing food ends, an interactive CD-Rom based ‘Virtual Engineer’ for technical support, and our UK facility suffered serious flooding after a weekend of exceptional rainfall. Our team attended the Cannex Fillex de las Américas show in Las Vegas, USA.

2008

This year witnessed a major global financial crisis that had profound and lasting economic repercussions. The world’s first Android mobile phone was released, and Spotify was officially launched. SpaceX launched Falcon 1, becoming the first privately developed rocket to reach orbit successfully and the summer Olympics were held in Beijing, China.

Sencon launched the SI9650, a revised model of the HoverProbe™, which accurately measures coatings thickness (film weight) on flat sheets. An upgraded Label Verifier, LVC180 and the SC7100 Spray Verifier along with a Can Count sensor for slimline cans. Our team attended the Metpack show in Essen, Germany.

This year’s mousemat featured an image of Montpellier, France with its elegant stone architecture, lively plazas, and sunny mediterranean atmosphere.

2009

This year saw Barack Obama inaugurated as the first african-american US President, the death of Michael Jackson and the global spread of the H1N1 (swine flu) pandemic. NASA launched its Kepler Space Telescope to search for earth-like planets, and CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC) successfully circulated its first proton beams, marking a milestone in particle physics research. The UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen brought global attention to environmental issues, and US Airways Flight 1549 made a successful emergency landing on the Hudson River after experiencing bird strikes.

Sencon launches TechInfo, an online knowledge library for support documentation. The UK moved in to their new, much larger, purpose-built facility situated just outside Droitwich Spa, not far from their previous UK base in Worcester. Our team attended the Cannex Fillex Asia Pacific show in Guanzhou, China.

2010

This year saw 33 Chilean miners successfully rescued after 69 days trapped nearly half a mile underground, a powerful triumph of human resilience and international cooperation. The Winter Olympics were held in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and Spain beat Netherlands in the FIFA World Cup in South Africa, the first ever on the African continent.

Sencon launches the fully automatic Master Series™ Enamel Rater, and the Benchmark™ DRG – Dome Reversal Gauge. Our team attended the Cannex Fillex de las Américas show in Las Vegas, USA.

This year’s mousemat featured a photo entitled “Earthrise” taken by Apollo 8 astronaut William Anders.

2011

This year saw the end of a significant chapter in space exploration with the end of the US Space Shuttle program and the Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan, triggered by a massive earthquake and tsunami. The popular television series ‘Game of Thrones’ premiered on HBO, becoming a cultural phenomenon, and the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton captivated global audiences.

Sencon launches the Benchmark™ Axial Load Gauge and the 487 Short Can Sensor, that optimizes to the carbide punch on the bodymaker. Our team attended the Metpack show in Essen, Germany.

This year’s mousemat featured an image of the Chateau Impney, a 19th-century house built in the style of an elaborate French château near Droitwich Spa in Worcestershire, England.

2012

This year saw Queen Elizabeth II celebrate her Diamond Jubilee, marking 60 years on the British throne, while the world said goodbye to Lonesome George, the last known Pinta Island tortoise, symbolizing the loss of a species. Barack Obama was re-elected as President of the United States, while the Curiosity rover successfully landed on Mars, marking a major achievement in space exploration. The Summer Olympics and Paralympics in the United Kingdom brought nations together in a celebration of sport, and the world mourned the death of celebrated physicist Stephen Hawking.

Sencon launches the Master Series Back End Gauge, the Benchmark™ Buckle Gauge and the ULTP/ELTP Light Detector heads were updated, doubling sensitivity. Our team attended the Cannex Fillex Asia Pacific show in China.

This year’s mousemat featured a photo of Sencon employee Tim Redding at 4,949 metres (16,237 ft) climbing Mt. Sanford, Alaska, USA.

2013

This year saw the words “twerk” and “selfie” added to the dictionary with taking selfies and posting them on social media becoming a popular trend. Pope Francis made history as the first Latin American pope and the first to join Twitter. Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) devastated the Philippines, and former NSA contractor Edward Snowden leaked classified information about mass surveillance programs.

Sencon launches the Master Series™ Axial Load and Buckle gauges and the Benchmark™ Back End (finished can) gauge. Our team attended the Cannex Fillex de las Américas show in Atlanta, USA.

This year’s mousemat featured an image of the iconic, neon-drenched night skyline of Hong Kong's Victoria Harbour, with its towering skyscrapers dramatically reflected on the water's surface.

2014

This year saw a global agreement on climate change and scientists confirmed the ozone layer was in recovery. Advancements in stem cell research leading to new treatments for diabetes and the song "Happy" by Pharrell Williams became a global hit, with its music video inspiring people to dance and share their joy. Germany beat Argentina to win the Fifa World Cup held in Brazil.

Sencon launches the Master Series and Benchmark™ Front End gauges and the Master Series™ Optical Coatings Gauge. The ELTP™ receives a redesigned and improved light source. Our team attended the Metpack show in Essen, Germany.

This year’s mousemat featured an image of the "Cloud Gate" sculpture by Anish Kapoor in downtown Chicago, Illinois which is affectionately known as ‘the bean’.

2015

This year saw relations between the United States and Cuba begin to thaw, the signing of the Paris Climate Accord, and China abandons its one-child policy in favor of a two-child policy. NASA's New Horizons spacecraft performed a historic flyby of Pluto, Star Wars, The Force Awakens becomes one of the biggest movies of all time and SnapChat introduces filters

Sencon launches the Benchmark™ Optical Coatings Gauge and the 387 Short Can Sensor gets a redesign. Our team attended the Cannex Fillex Asia Pacific show in China.

This year’s mousemat featured a NASA image of Galaxy M106 using multi-wavelength data from radio waves to X-rays, chosen to commemorate the United Nations 'International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies', which aimed to raise global awareness about the significance of light and its applications across diverse fields.

2016

This year saw the UK vote to leave the European Union, the election of Donald Trump as 45th US President and Pokémon Go briefly takes over everyone’s social life. The world mourned the loss of music icons David Bowie, George Michael and Prince, and the Zika virus, became a major global health concern.

Sencon celebrated its 40th anniversary, launches a non-contact Shell Gauge for EOE ends, and the light source for the ULTP can light tester gets a redesign. Our team attended the Cannex Fillex de las Américas show in Denver, USA.

This year’s mousemat featured a visually striking, abstract image that evokes light photons traveling in a fiber optic cable and also alludes to data arrays, emphasizing both technical precision and design excellence through the use of non-contact technologies.

2017

This year saw global economic growth with stock markets around the world hitting record highs. Mexico designated the largest marine reserve in the Pacific, and the snow leopard was taken off the endangered species list. NASA's Cassini space probe sent back its last incredible photos before its planned crash into Saturn and ‘Moonlight’ won an Oscar for Best Picture, although it was initially announced as ‘La La Land’ due to a mix-up

Sencon launches the multi-probe version of the Benchmark™ Front End Gauge and our team attended the Metpack show in Essen, Germany.

This year’s mousemat featured an image of Pikes Peak, Colorado Springs, USA, taken by Rod Jefferies from a Cessna 172R light aircraft at 14,115 ft (4,302m) piloted by Sencon employee Andy Hinks.

2018

This year saw the launch of the first NASA spacecraft named after a living person, the Parker Solar Probe. The Winter Olympics were held in Pyeongchang, South Korea, and France beat Croatia in the FIFA World Cup final held in Moscow. The power of international cooperation was demonstrated through the successful rescue of a youth soccer team and their coach trapped in a flooded cave in Thailand.

Sencon launches the ES8000™, a combined Shell and Progression gauge which provided non-contact measurement of food and beverage ends/lids. Our team attended the Cannex Fillex Asia Pacific show in China.

This year’s mousemat featured an image taken by Sunil Suresh of GZ Industries of fishermen pushing their boat out from the beach.

2019

This year saw scientists capture the first-ever image of a black hole, the humpback whale saw a significant recovery in its population, increasing from 450 to over 25,000 and the first all-woman spacewalk takes place. A devastating fire ravaged the historic Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, large-scale wildfires swept through the Amazon rainforest, and youth-led climate strikes, inspired by Greta Thunberg, take place around the world.

Sencon launches the PG5600, a compact and low-cost auto enamel rater, and Quasar™, a new generation light tester, which brings significant advancements to on-press inspection for converted ends. Our team attended the Cannex Fillex de las Américas show in Denver, USA.

2020

This year was almost completely defined by the global COVID-19 pandemic, which led to social and economic disruption worldwide, mass cancellations and postponements of events, lockdowns, and the largest economic recession since the Great Depression in the 1930s.

Sencon continued to work through the pandemic, providing remote support and calibration kits to help keep can plants running. We introduced MLT 2.0, our latest generation Micro Leak Tester for ends, and the improved 491 End Count Sensor suitable for use with all colors of ends.

This year’s mousemat featured an image of Klongchao Waterfalls in Thailand taken by the team at Multitech Co. Ltd. a longstanding Sencon agent.

2021

This year saw the retirement of Microsoft Internet Explorer, the Summer Olympics in Tokyo, and the continued global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. NASA successfully generated oxygen on Mars using the Perseverance rover, China was certified malaria-free by the World Health Organization, and ABBA released their first album in 40 years.

Sencon launches the Master Series™ and Benchmark™ Film-Scan™ optical coatings gauges. Film-Scan uses the latest coatings thickness optical scanning technology which allows more locations on the can to be measured, including plug, neck, dome, side-dome, reverse wall and rim coat.

This year’s mousemat featured a high-speed photograph of a water droplet taken by Mark Godfrey of Stolle Machinery. The image captures the mesmerizing rebound when the splash crown collapses and forms a delicate, almost crystalline column topped by a secondary droplet.

2022

This year was dominated by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, marking the largest military conflict in Europe since World War II and triggering massive global economic and energy instability. The year also sees the world’s population officially surpasses eight billion, and the death of Queen Elizabeth II who had reigned as the British monarch for over 60 years. The FIFA World Cup was held in Qatar with Argentina beating France on penalties after a 3-3 draw, the winter Olympics were held in Beijing, and an ice shelf in Antarctica collapses.

Sencon sees demand for advanced sensing, inspection and measurement products grow massively due to the social, cultural and economic shifts following the pandemic, which have driven a sustained rise in at-home consumption for canned beverages in particular. The pressure on can manufacturers to increase output rapidly while maintaining flawless quality has made precision quality control technology more critical than ever.

2023

This year saw significant natural disasters including earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, wildfires in Canada. It also saw the widespread adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI), which captivated the public and paved the way for a new wave of innovation across every industry. In the UK and USA, CRISPR was approved for gene-editing therapy to treat severe genetic diseases. India’s Chandrayaan-3 successfully landed near the Moon's South Pole, while the UK celebrated the coronation of King Charles III.

Sencon launches Quasar™ II, the latest iteration of our advanced light detection technology for cans and ends, offering greater detection sensitivity, increased speed capability and improvements to detection reliability. Our team attended the Metpack show in Essen, Germany.

This year’s mousemat featured an image of Ponte Estaiada, also known as the Octávio Frias de Oliveira bridge, a cable-stayed bridge in São Paulo, Brazil.

2024

This year saw Japan land a probe on the moon, China bring back samples from the far side of the moon, and private astronauts complete the first commercial spacewalk. Major advances were made in protein structure prediction using AI, the Summer Olympics were held in Paris, and Mexico inaugurated its first female president, Claudia Sheinbaum.

Sencon launches the rechargeable SL4000™ oven temperature logger for monitoring curing ovens, providing a precise picture of temperature-over-time. Our team attended the Cannex Fillex Asia Pacific show in Guangzhou, China.

This year’s mousemat featured an image of ‘Ozzy’ the mechanical bull that became a star of the Commonwealth Games which were held in the city of Birmingham, England. The much-loved sculpture was named after the lead singer of Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne, who was born in the city.

2025

This year saw groundbreaking advances in AI and quantum computing, performing computational tasks far beyond the reach of classical supercomputers. The United Nations celebrates its 80th anniversary, and a historic new malaria vaccine began to save lives in Africa. Guam kingfishers were successfully released on Palmyra Atoll, with three pairs going on to lay eggs, a significant step for this endangered species.

Sencon launches the SCM387 bringing additional features to 387 Short Can Sensors, the improved 445 Can Line sensor and a refreshed range of enamel rating can stands. Our team attended the Cannex Fillex show in Denver, Colorado.

This year’s mousemat featured an AI generated image from the prompt: “Friendly robot inspecting the key features of a blue soda can”.

2026

This year will see Sencon celebrate 50 years of canmaking confidence and we may also have a few interesting product announcements to unveil throughout the year.
