2-PIECE CAN
MANUFACTURING

Two-piece can forming using the DWI (drawn and wall ironed) method was invented in the United States in 1958. A DWI can is formed from aluminum or steel, which is drawn into a cup shape at the cupper before being "wall-ironed". This is carried out with a high speed ram and punch that pushes metal cups through a series of forming rings which stretch the side wall material and creates the domed base of the can against shaped tooling at the end of the bodymaker. After trimming to the correct side wall height, cans go through a washer before heading to the coater/printer where the external print designs are added with an overvarnish. The cans then travel though a curing oven mounted on a pin chain before an internal coating is applied for protection of the contents. After baking in another oven to cure the internal coating, the cans go through the necker where the top is narrowed and a flange is added.

DWI cans are mainly used for beer and carbonated soft drinks (CSD) and for some aerosol products. The can bottom is dome-shaped to withstand internal pressure, often with an added reform groove for additional strength. The can forming method uses the advantage of metal ductility to enable the sidewall to be just 0.1 mm thin, with the can weight being much lighter than typical 3-piece cans. DWI beverage cans come in many standard sizes of diameter and sidewall height with a variety of end/lid style options.

Sencon supports the canmaking process with line and machine control sensors, test and ispection equipment for monitoring the process, and a full range of gauges for measuring and quality control.
