Semi-Automatic Enamel Rater

Reduce measurement errors when checking lacquer integrity on cans and ends

Sencon's Semi-automatic Enamel Rater checks lacquer/coatings integrity on cans and ends using the industry standard conductivity test. A small, safe voltage is applied between an electrolyte (conductive fluid) inside the can and the body of the can. The resulting current flow indicates the amount of metal exposure caused by imperfections (porosity) in the lacquer.

  • Quick, user friendly, fail-safe semi-automatic operation
  • High resolution electronics with advanced test monitoring features in a rugged waterproof casing
  • Supported by a wide range of Sencon stands and adapters for many types of metal packaging
  • Supervisor control options for flexible data control
  • Internal batch reporting
  • Durable design gives value for money

The most widely used gauge in the canmaking industry

An enamel rater is used to test for metal exposure by checking the integrity of coatings or lacquer on metal packaging. The SI9200 gauge is used in combination with a can stand or adapters for various types of metal packaging.

QUICK SEMI-AUTOMATIC OPERATION

Auto-start and auto-save functions eliminate button pressing for faster operation and more tests. The gauge monitors insertion and removal of cans on the stand, starting and completing the test automatically.

BUILT-IN RELIABILITY

Multiple self-test features ensure consistent enamel rating test conditions at all times:

  • Electrolyte level check
  • Body contact check with test interlock
  • Active voltage sensing at the probe tip
  • Automatic voltage compensation
  • High resolution electronics with advanced test monitoring

CONTINUAL, FAIL-SAFE SELF-MONITORING

The SI9200 monitors the electrolyte level and the body contact before and throughout the test, since a fault with either of these will create a “good” reading, regardless of the actual lacquer quality. Active voltage sensing at the probe tip is coupled with automatic voltage compensation to ensure consistent test conditions at all times. These fail-safe features ensure that each test is performed correctly.

USER FRIENDLY INTERFACE

Soft touch keys assist accurate data entry. Multi-language support makes for quick and easy operation in different regions. All set-up and configuration can be done from the front panel. Three levels of security prevent inadvertent adjustment of system settings.

SUPERVISOR CONTROL OPTIONS

Optional screen blanking during the test cycle prevents operators bypassing cans with high mA readings before the result is recorded. A user definable overload value allows easy integration with in-house data analysis software.

INTERNAL BATCH REPORTING

Push-button batch and can number displays allow measurements to be grouped in batches. The internal computer will calculate batch statistics and send data to an externally connected computer in a variety of formats. The gauge can store up to 2000 readings as a batch, as well as multiple batches. Statistical information about the batch is displayed during the batch test. At the end of the batch the readings can be output to a printer or computer in tabular format together with the statistical information.

DURABLE DESIGN GIVES VALUE FOR MONEY

  • Recessed connectors with strain protection prevent damage
  • Rugged, waterproof and corrosion-proof polyurethane casing designed to withstand the factory environment
  • An IP65 rating allows operation in "hose down" areas
  • Designed for maximum durability with minimal maintenance

Frequently Asked Questions

These are some questions we frequently hear from people looking at our SI9200 Enamel Rater. If you don’t see yours, please contact your regional Sencon office.

What is the primary function of the SI9200?

The SI9200 is used to test for metal exposure by checking the integrity of internal coatings or lacquer on metal packaging. This is critical for ensuring the quality and safety of the containers.

How does it perform these tests?

It uses the industry-standard conductivity method. A low, safe voltage is applied between the electrolyte placed inside the container and the container body itself. The resulting current indicates the level of metal exposure caused by coating defects.

What makes the SI9200 "semi-automatic"?

The gauge features auto-start and auto-save functions that eliminate unnecessary button presses. It automatically detects when a can is inserted or removed from the stand to initiate and complete the test cycle, which increases throughput speed.

Can the device be used in wet production environments?

Yes. The SI9200 is housed in a rugged, water-resistant IP65-rated enclosure made of corrosion-resistant polyurethane. This design is specifically intended for reliable use in production and wash-down areas.

The optional VESA mounting plate allows the SI9200 to be mounted on a monitor arm, raising it off the workbench and reducing its exposure to electrolyte splashing.

What fail-safe features are included to ensure accurate results?

The gauge performs continual self-monitoring, including:

  • Electrolyte level checks and body contact checks (to prevent "good" readings caused by setup faults).
  • Active voltage sensing at the probe tip and automatic voltage compensation to ensure stable test conditions.

Can I prevent unauthorized changes to the settings?

Yes. The system offers three configurable security levels for supervisor control to prevent unauthorized parameter changes. There is also an optional "display blanking" feature during the test cycle to prevent operators from bypassing high readings before they are captured.

How much data can the device store?

The SI9200 can store approximately 2,000 readings.

Does it provide statistical analysis?

Yes. Statistical data is calculated in real-time and can be grouped into batches (1 to 99 cans). Batch reports can be displayed on-screen or output to a PC or printer via a serial RS232 interface.

What accessories are required to use the SI9200?

To operate the gauge, you must use a Sencon Can Stand or Adapter. The SI9200 is compatible with existing 8-pin accessories, such as the SI9101 Beverage Can Stand, SI9102 General Can Stand, SI9015 Superstand™ or the SI9019 Ends/Caps Enamel Rater.

The new self-checking SI9201 Beverage and SI9202 General Can Stands provide extra functionality when used with the SI9200 enamel rater.
