Flange angle and seaming clearance measured as standard

IMPROVED R&R

Non-contact measurement reduces gauge variability which helps to improves process capability (CPk). This is increasingly demanded as cans become lighter, lines get faster, and product designs become more diverse.

LOWER COSTS

The system uses no mechanical transducers, so there is almost no maintenance required and running costs are very low.

ADDITIONAL MEASUREMENTS

More critical features can be measured with Sencon's unique CAN-SCAN™ optical technology, such as the Flange Angle and Seaming Clearance, which have always been part of the can specification but could not be reliably and repeatbaly measured until now. A Base Reform measurement option may be added at any time. All measurements are made simultaneously, so the additional module does not increase testing time.

MULTIPLE CAN SIZES

The SI6501 Back End Gauge / Finished Can Gauge does not need any change parts for different can heights. Standard body and neck diameters are handled with simple, drop-in fixtures.

SUITABLE FOR CAN FILLING LINES

This gauge is also useful on beverage filling lines to check key dimensions of incoming finished cans

Benefits of Benchmark™ Series Gauges

The Benchmark Series is a uniquely comprehensive range of benchtop gauges for beverage can measurement, test and inspection. The gauges use the same advanced technologies as the fully automatic Master Series™, making available Sencon's well-proven gauging solutions in compact, standalone units that are well suited to the quality assurance laboratory and are equally at home beside the production line.

Fast, semi-automatic operation

Procedures are defined and selected with Sencon's proprietary Process Master™ gauging software or via intuitive touch screen icons. Then as soon as a can is loaded and the safety door closed the test is automatically carried out.

Multiple can sizes

The gauges all accept different can body and neck diameters and can heights, with either no change parts or quick-fit inserts (see individual pages for details).

Flexible configuration

The gauges are highly configurable for test parameters, setting up of operator and supervisor presets, and for display and output of results.

Excellent R&R for better process control

Reliable and consistent measurements from gauges with excellent R&R (repeatability and reproducibility) allow manufacturers to gain better control of their process. Sencon has carefully researched and developed appropriate technologies for each test to deliver accuracy and efficiency in the beverage can making plant. The gauges are constantly self-monitoring and self-calibrating to ensure optimum performance at all times.

Low maintenance, low running costs

Each gauge is designed for low maintenance, eliminating wear parts where possible to reduce running costs and maximize durability

Frequently Asked Questions

These are some questions we frequently hear from people looking at our Benchmark™ Back End Gauge. If you don’t see yours, please contact your regional Sencon office.

What is the Back End Gauge used for?

The Benchmark™ Back End Gauge provides non-contact measurement of key dimensions on finished (necked) beverage cans such as height, flange width, plug diameter, dome depth, flange angle, and seaming clearance.

Do I need to use different parts for different can heights or diameters?

No. The gauge handles standard body and neck diameters using drop-in tool-free inserts and automatically adjusts for different can heights—no change parts are required.

Can I measure additional features beyond the standard set?

Yes. Optical scanning via Sencon’s CAN-SCAN™ technology enables measurement of more critical features like flange angle and seaming clearance. A Base Reform measurement option can be added without increasing testing time, as all measurements are captured simultaneously.

Which types of cans can the gauge handle?

The device is designed for necked (finished) beverage cans, supporting both aluminium and steel materials.

What are the electrical and environmental specifications?

  • Voltage: 100–240 V AC, single-phase
  • Operating temperature: 15 °C to 40 °C (59 °F to 104 °F)
  • Relative humidity: 0% to 80% non-condensing
  • Ingress Protection: IP20
  • Dimensions: 400 mm × 650 mm × 875 mm (approx. 15.8″ × 25.6″ × 34.5″)
  • Weight: 75 kg (165 lb) (gauge only)

How is data handled and reported?

Measurement results are displayed on an attached PC using Process Master™ software. Batch results are shown on-screen and can be exported to network storage or sent to a printer. The software stores a user-definable number of batch results (default is 100).

How is calibration and drift detection managed?

The gauge re-baselines against provided setting pieces if measurement drift is detected. Annual calibration of setting pieces is strongly recommended for optimal performance.

What are the benefits of using non-contact technology?

  • Improved process capability (CPk) due to reduced gauge variability
  • Minimal maintenance and running costs since there are no mechanical transducers or wear parts
  • Excellent repeatability and reproducibility (R&R), aiding quality assurance, especially as can designs evolve and line speeds increase
  • Simultaneous measurement of multiple dimensions without extending test time

Can this gauge also be used on filling lines?

Absolutely. It’s suitable for checking key dimensions of incoming finished cans directly on can filling lines.

How does this semi-automatic unit compare to the fully automatic Master Series™?

While the Benchmark™ unit provides compact, standalone semi-automatic operation perfect for QA labs, the Master Series™ offers fully automatic, modular configurations with multi-lane conveyors, more extensive automation features, and seamless data integration (e.g., OPC-UA).

Visit the Master Series Back End gauge product page here.

Where can I find manuals or technical documentation?

Technical resources—including user manuals and software—are available in Sencon’s Technical Document Library. Access requires a company email (e.g., not Gmail) and registration may take time as it is not automated.

What support and service options does Sencon provide?

Sencon offers worldwide service, accredited calibration, and after-sales support from engineers across North/South America, Europe, and Asia, backed by multiple technical support centers.
