A BREAKTHROUGH FOR CAN MAKERS AND FILLERS

In search of the 'lost' dimensions

Optical scanning with Sencon Benchmark™ semi-automatic or Master Series™ fully automatic Back End Gauges now allows important 'lost' dimensions on the can to be measured, which were previously impossible to record accurately and repeatably.

FLANGE ANGLE AND SEAMING CLEARANCE

Flange Angle and Seaming Clearance (sometimes known as “J-dimension”) have always been part of the DWI beverage can specification, but, until now, they have never been part of regular production quality checks. This is because it's very challenging to make these measurements in a reliable way using any form of contact gauge.

Sencon's unique Can-Scan™ optical technology makes a 360° optical scan of the finished can. A highly accurate profile of the complete can body is formed from this data. This allows precise calculation of those difficult necking features along with all the other key measurements. And because the optical scan collects data from the whole can simultaneously, there is no time penalty for measuring these additional features.

Can measurements achievable with Sencon Finished can gauge

Two happy customers

A filler was having some major problems setting up their seamer operation. In order to solve the issue, they needed accurate information about the Flange Angle and Seaming Clearance on the cans received from their supplier. Fortunately, the can maker in question had a Sencon Back End Gauge, which is the only gauge on the market that can reliably measure Flange Angle and Seaming Clearance ('J' Dimension) in addition to standard finished can body dimensions.

The canmaker passed this detailed measurement information on to the filler which enabled them to successfully set up their seamer properly. The filler was so impressed that they have now invested in their own Sencon Back End/Finished Can Gauge.
