World's first reliable flange thickness measurement

A 'lost' measurement

Flange thickness has been part of the specification for beverage and food cans for many years, because this dimension is critical to seaming performance and can integrity. Setting and assessing seam tightness is one of the most important quality control issues for fillers. This crucial function relies on knowing the thickness of the flange on the cans they receive from their suppliers. Until now, this data has relied on inherently variabe manual measurements, or it is simply recorded as a nominal value based on top wall measurent of trimmmed cans at the 'front end' stage of production before the flange has been formed.

A highly reliable instrument

Developed in response to customer requests, Sencon’s benchtop Flange Thickness gauge delivers the industrys first high-precision solution for measuring this key dimension on the can specification. The gauge uses a Linear Variable Differential Transformer (LVDT) with 1mm ruby tips mounted on a floating gimble that applies near-zero force to the flange. Together with a horizontal loading system that prevents lacquer distortion at the point of measurement, maximum accuracy is assured.

Fast, accurate, and easy-to-use

Users can set and store up to 20 user-programmable test procedures via a 9-inch high-resolution icon-driven color touchscreen. The gauge's short cycle time delivers a measurement range of 0 to 0.3 mm with highly repeatable results to ±2μm accuracy. Quick-change, tool-free inserts allow for rapid change can sizes, with change parts conveniently stored inside the gauge.

Benefits of Benchmark™ Series Gauges

The Benchmark Series is a uniquely comprehensive range of benchtop gauges for beverage can measurement, test and inspection. The gauges use the same advanced technologies as the fully automatic Master Series™, making available Sencon's well-proven gauging solutions in compact, standalone units that are well suited to the quality assurance laboratory and are equally at home beside the production line.

Fast, semi-automatic operation

Procedures are defined and selected with Sencon's proprietary Process Master™ gauging software or via intuitive touch screen icons. Then as soon as a can is loaded and the safety door closed the test is automatically carried out.

Multiple can sizes

The gauges all accept different can body and neck diameters and can heights, with either no change parts or quick-fit inserts (see individual pages for details).

Flexible configuration

The gauges are highly configurable for test parameters, setting up of operator and supervisor presets, and for display and output of results.

Excellent R&R for better process control

Reliable and consistent measurements from gauges with excellent R&R (repeatability and reproducibility) allow manufacturers to gain better control of their process. Sencon has carefully researched and developed appropriate technologies for each test to deliver accuracy and efficiency in the beverage can making plant. The gauges are constantly self-monitoring and self-calibrating to ensure optimum performance at all times.

Low maintenance, low running costs

Each gauge is designed for low maintenance, eliminating wear parts where possible to reduce running costs and maximize durability

Frequently Asked Questions

These are some questions we frequently hear from people looking at our Benchmark™ Flange Thickness Gauge. If you don’t see yours, please contact your regional Sencon office.

What is the Sencon Benchmark™ Flange Thickness Gauge?

It is a semi-automatic benchtop gauge designed to provide high-precision measurements of flange thickness on necked beverage cans. It addresses a traditional "blind spot" in quality control where this critical dimension was previously measured manually or estimated using nominal values.

Why is flange thickness such a critical measurement?

The flange is the most important physical feature on a can body because it acts as the interface between the can and the lid. Accurate thickness data is essential for fillers to correctly set up their seamers, ensuring the integrity of the double seam and the overall safety of the packaged product

How does it ensure measurements are repeatable across different shifts?

The system is engineered to minimize operator influence. It features a robust design and a spring-loaded gimbal that ensures the can remains concentric during rotation, providing consistent results regardless of the operator.

How difficult is it to switch between different can sizes?

The gauge features quick-change, tool-free inserts for rapid changeover between neck diameters. All change parts are conveniently stored within the gauge itself.

Can I customize the measurement points?

Yes. Users can define multiple measurement slices around the flange at specific distances from the cut edge to suit their inspection requirements.

What range of can sizes does it support?

It accommodates a wide variety of sizes, from 202 stubby to 214 tall (up to 73mm diameter and 196mm height).

Is the interface easy to use?

Yes, it uses Sencon's new touch enabled HMI, an integrated 9-inch high-resolution touchscreen that is icon-based for intuitive operation.

How can I get technical support?

Sencon provides global support through technical specialists and service engineers based in North and South America, Europe, and Asia. Support is accessible via email, telephone, web chat, and our 'Quick Assist' QR codes (offering WhatsApp support in select regions).

Annual calibration will ensure your Benchmark™ Flange Thickness Gauge continues to perform as it should

As the original manufacturer, Sencon recommends that your equipment is re-calibrated annually. So whether you need on site or return to base calibration for gauges, gauge setting pieces, or other important quality assurance equipment such as oven loggers – make sure to request your re-calibration with Sencon.
