2-PIECE FOOD CAN
MANUFACTURING

2-piece metal food cans are formed either by a drawn and redrawn (DRD) or drawn and wall-ironed (DWI) process. Their sidewall and bottom are pressed out of a single piece of steel with an end seamed to the can top. This differs to 3-piece food cans which are made from a flat steel sheet (or blank sheet) which is cut, rolled and side-seamed to form a cylindrical shape with top and bottom double seamed on the can. Two-piece cans benefit from having no side seam, no seam between the body and the bottom end, and use less material within their manufacture. However, the manufacturing process is required to be more precise, and so robust quality assurance procedures need to be in place.
