Although it may be true that white light, with its shorter wavelength, is theoretically able to penetrate smaller holes, silicon light detectors have a much higher sensitivity within the near infra-red wavelength. This allows Sencon’s Quasar™ II infra-red detectors to set their base threshold higher, above the inevitable electrical background noise that is generated within the press – reducing the potential for false rejects and the impact this can have on your production.
The high density of next-generation LEDs in Sencon's QUASAR™ II lighting arrays delivers 20% more light intensity than the previous ELTP model and much more uniform illumination than other systems. The QUASAR™ II arrays also have built-in redundancy protection for consistent and reliable leak detection.

Lower density of LEDs leads to the potential for ‘dark spots’
Conversion presses can have upwards of 30G vibration, so having integral vibration suppression built into the detector head is of major importance on fast running presses. Reducing vibration of the detector head will protect the delicate electronics inside from damage, contributing to the long term reliability and longevity of the system. Also, the ability for the detector head to move slightly ensures that the upper inspection plate remains in full contact with the ends, reducing the risk of light leakage and ensuring consistent readings without false rejects.

The advanced touchscreen HMI for Sencon’s Quasar™ II light detectors is both powerful and easy to use, allowing for seamless interaction, customization, and control. Real-time information such as bad can counts, fault diagnostics, and system status is displayed on screen. The system sets its own dynamic detection threshold to compensate for variable environmental conditions and the innevitable background noise that occurs on the press. System settings can be quickly accessed through the new touchscreen HMI. The 'cleanliness test' (non-mechanical 'shutter test') does not require any additional hardware and can now be activated via E/IP as well as ModBus TCP. This industry 4.0 compatible system can also integrate data into your plant’s SPC software through E/IP or ModBus.
Light detectors don’t actually measure the size of a hole in an end. They measure the amount of light passing through fractures or microscopic flaws in the metal. From repeated testing over years of experience, Sencon has developed highly reliable algorithms that correlate light detected on the press and equivalent virtual ‘pinholes’.
