Against the Odds at Castle Combe (13/4/2009)
Racing driver Charles Adrian completely rebuilt his Sencon sponsored Formula 4 car over the winter to conform to Class B rules. Competing in this class for the season was felt to be more appropriate to the current situation, because it imposes less cost demands and has less environmental impact due to a lower powered engine.
The double headed race at Castle Combe, near Chippenham, Wiltshire was Charles' first outing to test out to the new build. Late delivery of some parts by a supplier meant that the Sencon car couldn't enter the qualifying laps and had to start the first race at the back of the grid. But despite this handicap, Charles drove through the field to come in 8th overall and first in class B.

As winner in its class, the yellow car with its prominent Sencon branding took pole position on the grid for the second race. Following a flying start, the clutch began to overheat after the third bend and Charles had to drop to the back of the pack to let it cool down. But from lap two onwards a crowd of about 5000 people watched as Charles got used to handling the different engine build and steadily fought his way back among the leaders. At the end of fifteen laps he came in 9th overall and second in Class B, receiving a round of applause from the race marshals in recognition of his impressive recovery.
This all gives good hope for a competitive performance in the next race at Brands Hatch on April 25/26. Drawing on the experience at Castle Combe, Charles is now firmly focused on winning the Class B championship this season.
On Fighting Form at Brands Hatch (25-26/4/2009)
More clutch problems during qualifying put Charles at the back of the 26 car grid once more. But setting an excellent race pace, he overtook 15 cars in as many laps to finish tenth overall and second in class, becoming the current points leader of Class B.
A redesigned clutch is planned for the next outing in Anglesey on June 6-7. This should help to earn the Sencon car a more competitive position on the starting grid and the prospect of a good finish.
Winning Results at Angelsey (6-7/6/2009)
The Sencon sponsored Formula 4 car had a successful weekend racing in quite appalling weather. This round of the championship was held for the first time at the Anglesey Race Circuit, With the main straight 50 meters from the Irish Sea, the drivers where confronted with gale force winds and torrential rain throughout Saturday. Undaunted, Charles Adrian qualified second in class for Saturday’s race, where he finished 12th overall and second in class.
Sunday was much dryer, so the cars were set up for a drying circuit. Charles finished the race first in class B and eighth overall. These results will have helped strengthen Charles’ position as class B leader in the F4 national championship.
The car ran faultlessly throughout the weekend, so Charles is looking forward to being very competitive at Brands Hatch on the 21st of June.
Top Result at Brands Hatch (20-21/6/2009)
The Sencon sponsored Formula 4 car driven by Charles Adrian continues to mix it with the latest class A cars, despite running a Class B car with the older 1992 chassis.
The first race of the mid-summer meeting at Brands Hatch saw Charles catapult off the line from 13th on the grid to 9th. Following a restart due to the race being red flagged, another great standing start put Charles into 6th place, which he held all the way to the chequered flag.
In the second race Charles got off to another outstanding start, leading the pack for the whole of the first first lap. The Class A cars ultimately passed him, but another creditable performance secured 7th place at the end of the race.
The points scored this weekend place Charles 10th overall in the championship and still leading class B, 48 points ahead of his nearest rival.
The car ran faultlessly throughout the weekend, so Charles is looking forward to being equally competitive at the next meeting at Cadwell Park on the 12th July.
